Notes
1997/98 Auxiliary Garage built.
2000/2001 Unit upgraded to BA Status and trained in and issued with CABA.
With the new brigade structure introduced in the summer of 2003 the 3 Divisions were re-organised into 2 Commands North and South, South Lochs was put into South Command. Call signs remained the same.
On 1st April 2005 along with 61 other units South Lochs was upgraded to a Retained Unit, drilling one night per week and receiving a retaining fee.
South Lochs Volunteer Unit.
Recruited and formed 4/4/1977. The
OiC was Donald Macmillan with the rank of L/Fm. He was later made up to Sub O
and an additional L/Fm was made up. The unit was originally based in an old
nurses garage until the roof blew off, then in the Sub O’s own shed, the old
school and finally in a sectional wooden hut supplied by Brigade, on the site of
the present day station. Original strength was ten with one Sub O and one L/Fm.
Early equipment consisted of stirrup pump, bucket, No chimney rods! ten lengths
of 45mm hose various branch nozzles, and an Alcon pump with associated hard
suction.
Kenny Kennedy took over as Sub O in approx 1991 when Donald Macmillan retired.
Kenny had been promoted to L/Fm 30/8/1989.
The Community Association donated various bits of equipment including chimney
rods ,further buckets, rope, torches, and a first aid box, over this time.
Approx 1993 saw the donation of a trailer by the community, and additional
equipment was supplied by the Brigade, a Honda pump and some additional lengths
of hose, and finally a short extension ladder.
In 1995 volunteers adapted the trailer to carry the ladder, and house all the
additional bits of equipment that had been donated by the community and funded
by the volunteers themselves. These included tools, fire extinguishers, (which
were maintained at the volunteers own expense.) and crow bars ,axes, and
shovels.
At some stage between these dates we changed from Volunteers to Auxiliary
In 1997 the present station/garage was built and the LDV Convoy LFA R689OST was
installed.
In late 1998 Kenny Kennedy retired and I took over as Sub O with one L/Ff.
On the 7/8/2000 we became operational as a CABA unit.
In 2001 we had an additional L/Ff added to our strength.
